Our family is more than familiar with invisible illness. It runs deep in our family as far back as our grandparents and even our great grandparents. Our parents, being aware and a product of this family history, have always been open about mental and physical health struggles. When we came to them with our struggles, they would listen and try to find an answer. Health issues were not swept under the rug and we learned that a proper diagnosis can make all the difference. Our ability to live with our own invisible illnesses has developed as a result of this approach.
As is fairly common, social media has provided a glimpse beyond our own family culture. We have seen friends, family, and strangers asking questions about mental and physical health issues that we grew up talking about. One day we were discussing some of the questions we’ve seen and we realized that we grew up in an environment of openness and support when it comes to these “taboo” kinds of topics. Through our discussion we realized that experience is unique. Not everyone grew up with the support we had.
Missy first came up with the idea to start a blog many years ago, but nothing ever came of it. We recently revisited the idea and decided we are ready (sort of) to take the leap and begin sharing our experiences with the people of the internet. We have no idea how the blogging and social media world work, but we are taking the leap. In leaping, we hope we can help people begin to make sense of the world of invisible illness and to know that they are not alone.
